Although friends, family and the news have reminded me yesterday, I promptly forgot about daylight saving and got up an hour too early. So now I have time to kill and decided to do a long-pending friends cut.

All joking aside, I really have been meaning to do one for a while now, but seeing as I was hardly active on LiveJournal, it didn't seem appropriate. Now I am slowly getting back into it, and properly reading my f-list for the first time in months I realized I really didn't connect at all with some of you guys. To the point where I wonder, "who is this person and what is s/he doing on my f-list?".

I'm not here to put blame on anyone, I know I haven't been very communicative to start with. But I don't want total strangers to have access to my private thoughts anymore either.

If you feel like you've been wronged, speak up.

If you feel the same way about me, by all means, cut.

Thanks to everyone for their input on my latest post! Very interesting questions have been raised, and I broke down your ideas to three major topics, and added a fourth myself.

Re: Autopsies and Forensic Medicine
I'd have loved to talk about these things, because I'm also very interested in them personally, but unfortunately we haven't talked about forensic medicine yet (it'll come in the 7th semester, so only a few weeks late), and I don't really have the time to dig that deep into a completely unknown field. I think some of you guys probably know more about it at this point than I do. Maybe if the xcon this year will be any successful, there'll be another one a year or two later, and maybe if I can go again, I can hold a lecture about Scully's favourite activity then.

For now, I think the topics we came up with together are very interesting too. The question remaining: which one shall it be? I quickly thought of some working titles, and now it's your turn to pick. :)

Photoshop: And Everyone is Beautiful

Or in this case, younger!

A ton of outtakes from Gillian's Esquire shoot were posted to gillian_daily last night, and since I had been studying all day - so much that the familiar shoulder pains reemerged -, I thought I could afford to spend a little time in Photoshop. Because those just screamed to be played with.

After comparing the outtakes to the actual pictures published in the magazine, it tickled me to test my skills in editorial design, in other words beautifying a raw photo.

I carefully chose a picture that met the required potential (in the opinion of my humble amateur eyes), and this is the base photo as well as the result for your viewing pleasure. I recommend opening the full-sized versions in two separate tabs for better comparison.

What I did

I'm in no way an expert, so my editing is solely based on intuition. But since there are always people who know even less about it than I do, let me explain:

At first I tackled her skin and smoothed it out using the smudge tool and filters. Initially I wanted to leave her freckles untouched, but it was way past midnight, so I eventually lost my patience with them. I did pay attention to most of her moles though, because they just give it a more natural look. Working on the skin took the longest of all steps.

When I was satisfied with the skin-job, I needed to test its look in a different light and colouring, so I increased the contrast and used curves as well. I had to go back between this and the first step a couple of times until I had erased all disturbances.

I moved on to her eyes and enhanced their beautiful blue colour. It's crucial to find the golden middle when it comes to colour enhancing- otherwise it can quickly look too artificial.

I decided to bring out her make-up more as well, gave the eyes a stronger golden shimmer to harmonize with her hair, and the lips a soft pink/brown. I also darkened her eyebrows, which had faded out a lot during the light changes.

Finally the colouring: decided for a slightly greenish yellow style and worked out the details of hair, skin etc. separately.

Ta-da, that's it.

Disclaimer

This is not to say I don't find Gillian beautiful without any photoshopping, which - if you know me at all - would be the untruest thing to say about me ever. Her naturalness is one of the aspects I value and adore most about her character. It was a pure challenge for me, and it was a damn lot of fun working on her again.

And before you say it looks ~photoshopped~, uhm, yes it does, because that's what it is and what all the magazine's photos look like.

Now, what do you think? Should I consider a change of profession? ;)

If you think 3) applies to you, but you haven't been cut, it's because I do enjoy reading your posts, whenever I can take the time to, and I'd miss them on my f-list OR I still plan on changing that miserable state in the future.

Guides for London

The guides for London are finally done. We worked on the last details until late last night; sorry for not getting them out to you all sooner. We hope they're still on time for most of you.

I'm not going to say much else about the guides themselves here, since there is a Read me.txt in the .zip-file, that explains everything (I hope). Just note that everything you need to know is in this file, so you should definitely download it.

Don't let the URL irritate you. The .zip-file is hosted on the CtF-server, simply because I have better control over it like this, since some sensitive information is included on the leaflets. I am going to delete it from the server as soon as I'm back home, which will be on August 5th.

If there are any problems, feel free to contact me- but be aware that I will be on a plane tomorrow morning, and not be able to access the internet during my stay in London.

About the Badge

This post is your only chance to acquire a customized Global 1013 Badge. The badge was created for every X-Phile, who will be in London for the Premiere festivities between July 29 and August 1, 2008. Its purpose is easy and on the spot recognition by and of other Philes - regardless of what group or forum you belong to.

If you landed here through a link on one of the X-Files forums (Haven, XFU,...), do not worry or let yourself be irritated by the LiveJournal-setting. You don't need to be a LiveJournal-user to respond to this post. I am only doing this here, because - for me - it's the easiest way to handle the orders.

Instructions

(1) Choose one version of the badge's front design- white or blue script, whatever meets your personal taste better, and save it to your computer. The picture-links above will take you to the full-sized files. (Originally there was only a white version, but it was requested there be a coloured one, so I am offering both.)

(2) For your customized back design, copy the following form:

Paste it into a comment-box at the bottom of this post. (Click the "BUG ME" or the "Post a new comment" link.) Fill it out with your details and hit "Post Comment". I will then make your personal design and email it to you.

(3) Once you have received your customized design, you can either print the files yourself, or go to your nearest copy/print shop and have them do it for you (the result will most likely be better in the latter case). Explanations

In this case, I am choosing "so_vieh", because that name includes the second name automatically. If you have multiple extremely different screen names (see example badge), please choose the top two; this is a maximum! In general, think about the name you will be recognized with best.
Your Country - so I can give you your proper flag.
Your Places of Activity - so far the logos of the following places are available: Haven, LJ, XFU, Facebook, Big Light, XFilesmania, XFilesforum.net. Put down the forums you are active at in order of your preference (i.e. the one you like best/are most active at at first, the one with the least activity at last). FAQ

Why are you not giving us the .psd-file to change the details on our own? I can handle Photoshop!

I've thought about that. The reasons why I chose not to do it, are that I used some fonts, not everyone will have, and that I want all the tags to look the same. While making a customized design for everyone will be a lot of work, I prefer that, if it means I can make sure it all looks good and there aren't any problems.

Do you want anything in return for this?

Synopsis:

Brian (David Duchovny) and Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) are a happily married couple with two cute kids, a lovely house and garden, and a financially stable situation. Brian's only worries are his daughter's new found vegetarianism and his son's fear of putting his head under water- and the fact that his wife doesn't approve of his loyalty to his childhood friend, Jerry (Benicio Del Toro), who is now a drug-addict.

When one day Brian doesn't return home from a trip to get his family ice-cream, Audrey's life is changed forever. In her desperate attempts to deal with the aftermath of her husband's sudden violent death, Audrey turns to the one person she detested all these years.

Review:

With Things We Lost In The Fire Susanne Bier managed to create a sensitive melodrama, that strives for a realness rarely seen in American film. Her directing works with a lot of unsugarcoated close-ups, focusing on the protagonist's faces as much as the film does on their unmasked emotions- which are as powerful as the simplicity of the imagery itself. Though the movie is not lacking beauty, it doesn't look for it- it's as if it is only there by happenstance, sneaking in together with that certain sense of naturalness.

The film doesn't tell its story chronologically, but provides the viewer with pieces of information in scenes of the present and past, eventually completing the tragic puzzle. And with each of these scenes, the movie grows richer, fuller, deeper...and more enthralling. It is written and shot with a love for detail, some of which are recurrent and close a circle of memories and questions.

Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro both give mind-blowing performances; they let us feel, almost physically, what losing a loved one and what coming off a heroin-trip can be like.

Cut down to one sentence, it is a touching portray of love, loss, the resulting pain and struggle for hope.

Personal conclusion: It broke my heart. (Multiple times.) And I loved it.

While I was out looking for another Moviestar copy for outintherain, I also found Cinema and Widescreen, which feature articles about The X Files: I Want To Believe.

There isn't anything new, but the interview with Chris is kind of sweet. There's a DVD coming with it including the German Trailer though.

Cinema

Woah, lots of information! Of course I can't vouch for their correctness. What I've seen so far (not only in this magazine) was always researched very well, almost as if the authors were fans themselves. But in the end you have to make up your mind about it yourself.

(...) Some particles of information are available nevertheless, for example that it's not about aliens this time. The new movie is taking place several years after "The X Files: Fight the Future". The FBI-Agents Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), specialized on unexplained phenomena, have encountered numerous individual calamities since then. Mulder is on the run from authorities and hiding in rural Virginia, where he is suffering from a heavy personal crisis - possibly caused by a woman. Fate reunites him with Dana. Together they investigate a case, which proves to be of dark nature and possibly leads into religious, spiritual areas. A lot more was not to learn about the plot, even not on a set-visit with producer and co-author Frank Spotnitz ("The X Files", "Millennium"). (...) This day a scene is being filmed set in a hospital. Involved are Mulder and a character named "Father Joe". Mulder shows him several photos, which portray suspects of a crime. What kind of crime? Are you sincerely asking this??? "That's ok", replies Scully. "I am tired and confused. I have forgotten how fast things can change." Everything clear? [Vieh's note: Again, WTF author?] By the way: in the course of the shooting day the identity of the mysterious "Father Joe" is coincidentally revealed. XF2: IWTB - German Article Scans and Translations

Okay, here are the scans of the two articles I mentioned in my previous entry. The magazine is a free one lying out in cinemas- it's called "Treffpunkt Kino @ Cinemaxx" but I saw a magazine with identical content and cover, only with a different name, in another cinema (CineStar). The scans are from June's and July's editions. Quick translations below- I'm sorry if it sounds weird to native ears. I suck at translations, not wanting to go too far off from the original, but also trying to have it make sense.

More than a cult object: since the show became a popevent during its production period (nine seasons between 1993 - 2002) and achieved hit status, it inspired novels, comics, video games and movies. Number two is now released worldwide and a coronation for all action-thriller-mystery-fans, because creator Chris Carter thought up a brand new screen adventure. "The X Files: I Want To Believe" is about a particularly perfidious crime: a number of women went missing in Virginia - the police only finds a few scattered human remains and a ex-priest, whose weird visions lead to a medical experiment, that no one knew of so far. Actually a case for the X Files. Unfortunately the FBI had closed its division for paranormal phenomena years ago. To make progress in this delicate matter nevertheless, they decide to reactivate FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). But the two very different agents - Mulder is intuitive, Scully pragmatic and realistic - have not seen each other in ages. The erotic tension, which always characterized their platonic relationship, is back again. Could there be more to it this time? First of all they need to solve an unbelievable case, during which they unveil a large-scale conspiracy...Carter not only achieved to win the original cast and to complement it with Amanda Peet and Xzibit. ETA: For everyone, who doesn't want to believe. ;) edisto0304 kindly pointed me towards a news post by xfiles-mania.de (the biggest still active German XF Fansite)- they got an official synopsis for the movie from Fox Germany, and in there it says "they haven't seen each other in a long time" too. I don't know about you, but for me there's enough "proof" to believe this little plot detail.

So I bolded the tid-bit that was new to me. Either tell me, it isn't new at all, or discuss with me!

It's begun.

I herewith declare this particular day as a national holiday in X Files-land. OMFG, I still can't grasp that it's truly, really, undoubtedly happening, and that as I am sitting and typing here!

I've been uncharacteristically squeey and all over the place the whole day, recklessly annoying my fellow students by mentioning the SPECIAL DATE at least once every hour- suffice to say, they are no Philes at all, and as such couldn't comprehend the endless joy I felt in the least, which eventually let to a lot of teasing. -_-'

Thought I'd share my happiness with people who can appreciate it, and squee and bounce and flail with me!

So here I am. I told you about these things I got off ebay not so long ago? Well, here they are, because I figured there couldn't be a better day to show them to you. I hope looking at them will make you feel as gooey and in love as it did me. This is my first picspam of this kind and I fear I am not very witty or creative in commenting on the pics, but I genuinely hope you'll enjoy it.

Under the cut you will find 24 scans, click to see them full-sized. I spent quite some time scanning, resizing and editing these, so I'd be forever grateful if you dropped me a small comment. Ooh, the memories. It'll be so great to see them on the big screen together again, I can hardly hold my urine.

One of my all-time-favs: the youth, the innocence, the fluffy hair. I am all for nostalgia. So pretty in every way possible. If I ever am to meet David (gush) or Gillian (again), this would be the one and only photo I'd want them to sign for me.

I don't think I've ever done a friends cut as massive as this one, and I contemplated for minutes at every single checkbox- so it hasn't exactly been an easy thing to do. However, I felt it necessary; it's part of this change-phase I am in right now, I guess.

If you did get cut, it was because of one or several of the following reasons:

+ We never really talked.
+ We have stopped talking.
+ You abandoned your journal (for a new one).
+ You haven't updated your journal in months and completely disappeared from the LJ-surface.

If you didn't get cut, it was because:

+ I love you. Seriously, you rock.
